Injecting Innovation

It takes a certain conviction to launch an ultra-luxury watch brand in an industry with many existing established brands. Richard Mille felt that his desire for innovation and performance in a watch was not met by existing brands of the time and sought to carry out his vision by starting his own brand. Richard Mille the timepiece brand was born, and its emphasis on luxury with innovation has changed the way we look at luxury watches, injecting the industry with a much-needed inspiration, character and boldness while combining that with the value of time.

Bold And Deliberate

After leaving the jewelry firm Mauboussin, Richard Mille partnered up with his friend Dominique Guenat of the Montres Valgine SA to create timepieces that reflected their shared love for fast cars, aeronautics and mechanics. After years of research and crafting countless prototypes, they unveiled their first collaboration in 2001 with the RM 001 Tourbillon, defying the expectations of what a luxury watch should look like. Featuring a tourbillon mechanism, a power-reserve indicator and a torque indicator all exposed on the dial, the RM 001 Tourbillon is impressive up close as it is from afar. Its tonneau-shaped waterproof casing encrusted with crystal mineral glass pairs well with the luxury leather strap, creating the signature larger-than-life luxury that the brand becomes known for.

Fit For the Fast Life

Richard Mille timepieces took inspiration from pushing the limits, not only in terms of aesthetics but also in the limits of horological technology. The RM002, Richard Mille’s second offering, featured a titanium baseplate, the first of its kind in any luxury wristwatch.

Before Richard Mille, luxury watches leaned towards more expensive materials like gold and platinum, metals that provide durability and value to the watch but greatly weigh it down, especially when laden with complex complications to truly showcase a horological wonder. With a titanium baseplate and eventually, titanium parts and movements, Richard Mille was able to create technologically advanced watches that are lightweight and shock-proof, pieces that can go toe to toe against the mechanical wonders of the racing cars that inspired the brand.

In its quest for for innovation, Richard Mille's research and development team drew inspiration from the world of automobiles to develop advanced materials like the Black Carbon TPT® and Red Quartz TPT® a thin ply technology used to make ultra-thin unidirectional sheets of carbon fiber and quartz.

Besides using advanced materials, Richard Mille's watches are also known for pushing the boundaries of watch complication with complications like a tourbillon movement, flyback chronograph or annual calendar, often displayed under a layer of sapphire crystal with a skeletonized dial. For a flyback chronograph watch, RM watches are also known to have a high power reserve after a single wind.

It’s not a surprise that the luxury watch brand became a major sponsor for various races, from the legendary F1 Grand Prix to the revolutionary Le Mans Classic that Richard Mille and Peter Auto launched in 2002. The local ad market started featuring the RM brand, along with other watch brands too.

Richard Mille watches have also drawn inspiration from sports figures, such as the professional golfer, Bubba Watson. The RM 038 was designed for left-handers, and made to be light, shock-resistant, and comfortable at the same time.

No Compromise

Launching a relatively young luxury brand means that you cannot rely on a storied legacy to impress or justify a fancy price tag, but Richard Mille manages to penetrate the market by simply refusing to compromise. Regardless of the expense and efforts put into a watch or new model, it will not leave the workshop if it is not 100% perfect. This is an extraordinary feat considering that every part and movement of a Richard Mille watch is exposed and that titanium is an exacting metal to work with.

The Future of Richard Mille

Richard Mille watches continue to impress and innovate in recent years, true to its vision. For instance, the Richard Mille RM011 Automatic Flyback Chronograph Felipe Massa feature a skeleton dial, variable-geometry rotors, and is inspired by the Formula 1 race car. The RM011 white gold titanium flyback is made from Richard Mille’s proprietary Carbon TPT, a combination of carbon and quartz in the thinnest edition available. Recently, the brand has come up with a new edition, called the Gold Carbon TPT. This technology is not just being used in its men’s watches, but increasingly in its women’s watches too.
