In 1972, the Basel Fair, known as the most important trade show for Swiss watchmakers, was in for one of the biggest reveals that would change watchmaking history. Swiss watchmakers Jules Audemars and Edqard Piguet conscripted the help of Gerald Genta, designer of the Patek Philippe Nautilus, to create a timepiece yet unheard of: the luxury sports wristwatch.
Before that fateful fair, Audemars Piguet was already known as an established Swiss watch manufacturer. Officially founded in 1881 by childhood friends Jules Audemars and Edward Piguet, the brand was born in Le Brassus, Valle de Joux which Switzerland shared with northern France, known for its robust watchmaking industry and a particular meticulousness in watch craftsmanship.
It first made waves in the watch industry as the creator of the world’s first wristwatch imbued with a minute-repeating movement, which was sold to Omega SA, another Swiss watch company. Innovation was a signature in Audemars Piguet watches with several of the world’s firsts under their belt: the brand introduced the worlds’ first jumping-hour wristwatch in 1921, and the world’s first skeleton watch in 1934.
Today, the founding families of Audemars and Piguet continue to run the privately owned watchmaking company, passing down knowledge and know-how from generation to generation.
Named after the series of eight vessels of the British Royal Navy, the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak, or the AP Royal Oak was a gamble, but it was one that paid off. Boasting a dial inspired by traditional diving helmets, with its unique octagonal bevel design, exposed screws and steel bracelet. The one feature that made the Royal Oak stand apart from its counterparts at the time is that it is a self-winding chronograph.
This popular Audemars Piguet watch also comes in blue, black, grey, and silver dials for those looking for custom dials on their Royal Oak chronograph. For those who are searching by Tapisserie, models such as the on the 26252 Perpetual Calendar, the 26230 Chronograph, and the 26120 Dual Time have the Grande Tapisserie. Models such as the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Chronograph have the Méga Tapisserie, which is the largest pattern of all dials.
The Royal Oak launched the standard for Haute Horlogerie: a wristwatch that relied on its design, craftsmanship and innovative movement to fetch top dollar, cementing it’s place as one of the Holy Trinity of luxury watches. Each iteration of the Royal Oak, from its 20th-anniversary edition Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Diver to the most recent Royal Oak Jumbo Extra-Thin are all met with excitement, most especially in the serious collector circles.
The Royal Oak collection released in 1972 became a lasting series for the watch brand. Two decades later the series was revisited in 1993 as the Royal Oak Offshore. Later on in 2002, it was the Royal Oak Concept series with the AP Concept Tourbillon, featuring its Self-Winding Flying Tourbillon Chronograph.
The various models also featured a wide range of colours, such as white gold, yellow gold, pink gold, and even rose gold watches. Coloured dials such as white, black, blue, and green were also popular not just for AP watches, but also for other watch brands. Other than men’s watches, Audemars Piguet also came out with Women’s watches, such as the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Ladies 18k White Gold and 18k Rose Gold.
It can be said that Audemars Piguet’s lasting appeal can be attributed to their ability to adapt to the changes not only in the watchmaking industry but also with the zeitgeist, all without losing their iconic standing. From the Royal Oak models to other notable lines like the classic Jules Audemars, to the sleek oval designs of the Audemars Piguets Millenary collection, to the shifting aesthetics of the Concept Tourbillon chronograph, the Swiss brand continues to define the standard for luxury watches.
Up to this point, you might be wondering where you can obtain an original AP chronograph. While you can obtain one from Audemars Piguet itself, it is getting increasingly difficult to find a Royal Oak Offshore model from a boutique. One may find better luck finding their dream piece from a grey dealer instead. Whether you are looking for an Audemars Piguet self-winding chronograph, a Gold Royal Oak series watch, or a Millenary Frosted Gold series watch, these collectors are able to source for the timepiece you desire.
You may also find a Preowned Audemars Piguet Royal Oak that cost lesser with a watch boutique than with a first-hand purchase.
